Every year, Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries partner with the Office of Religious Education to host a special event for third graders from nearby Catholic schools to explore and learn about the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de Los Muertos. The children spend the entire day discovering the cultural and spiritual significance of the occasion. They begin with a presentation in the historic Calvary Mausoleum Chapel and then participate in creating traditional crafts and building an altar.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we refused to let it defeat us. Instead, we got creative and developed a video series and a downloadable PDF to ensure that our program continued to thrive. We're happy to share these resources with you, which you can find below.
Through the video series below, you are invited to learn about the meaning of Día de Los Muertos as a celebration that commemorates the Feast of All Souls. Step by step, you will learn how to decorate sugar skulls and picture frames for photos of their departed loved ones, craft paper marigold flowers and build a Día de Los Muertos altar with mementos of loved ones. We hope you enjoy these digital resources.
