Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, welcomed the return of their long-standing tradition of the Stations of the Cross following a two-year absence. A Lenten season tradition which began in the early 1920’s with local priests and deacons leading the Stations of the Cross through Calvary Cemetery Los Angeles.
The stations in this historic cemetery were funded by various parishes within the L.A. Archdiocese. A plaque recognizing each donor parish is adhered to the bottom of the station requesting prayers for their deceased parish members. The faithful walk to each station throughout the cemetery, usually a prayerful walk of 45 minutes. Francisco Reynoso, grounds worker with Calvary Cemetery for 36 years, has been a dedicated and faithful cross bearer for over 20 years carrying the cross with accompanying prayers to each of the 14 stations. Stations of the Cross takes place each Sunday of Lent culminating with the Reenactment of the Lord’s Passion on Palm Sunday.
The parish community of Resurrection Church (Boyle Heights) has presented the reenactment for 37 years, the past 6 years (excluding 2020 & 2021) on the front steps of Calvary’s Main Mausoleum, an ornate and befitting backdrop. Various parishes have also contributed to the reenactment with Our Lady of Victory Church (Compton) assisting this year. The public are welcome to join us and more information can be found on our calendar of events.
