After a two-year, pandemic-induced absence, our Catholic Cemetery locations welcomed the faithful to in-person Memorial Day Masses this year. That included San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, where hundreds turned out for a ceremony that was livestreamed on our Facebook pages and at CatholicCM.org.
After months of careful planning, excitement filled the air on Memorial Day morning as our cemetery and mortuary staff welcomed attendees to this special Mass, honoring our men and women who died while serving in our nation's armed forces.
The Los Angeles Police Department Honor Guard opened proceedings by presenting the colors while Dolores Gomez performed "God Bless America." Bishop Alex Aclan then presided over Mass, taking the place of Archbishop Jose Gomez, who was unable to celebrate as scheduled due to a mild case of COVID-19. Bishop Aclan spoke in moving words as he paid tribute to the members of our military who died to protect our nation's liberties. Our services concluded with "America the Beautiful" followed by the solemn playing of "Taps."
We look forward to in-public services for our upcoming Father's Day Rosary on Saturday June 18, and our All Souls Day Masses on November 2, at all 11 of our cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
